The fort was built between 1897 and 1901 to block the Italian army from likely access to Val Badia.
The fort was equipped with M 98 8 cm cannons and two M 98 6 cm cannons in a steel armored caponium, with four machine guns facing the Sief – Col di Lana and Passo Falzàrego and an observatory on the roof.
The garrison consisted of 50 men in command of two officers, and two non-commissioned officers with the task of presiding over the trenches of Valparola, and of Edelweiss Stellung and other posts in Sass de Stria.
At 13.00 on 5 July 1915 the fort was hit by the Italian artillery that fired from batteries, from Monte Pore, from Prà Pontìn, from Valiàte, and from Val Costeàna. The 210 mm grenades managed to pierce the unreinforced concrete roof and damage the structure, which was abandoned. However, the Austrians continued to illuminate it, so as to induce the Italian artillery to consider it still operational. Thanks to this stratagem, they continued to target the fort with evident waste of bullets, which could have hit other military targets.
The Austrian soldiers commented: “The Italians cost more to bomb it than the Austrians build it”. There is still no news to deny or support this rumor. The construction cost of the work is unknown, nor is it known how much the bombs cost.
A diary of an Austrian soldier reports that for the first two months, around 80 bombs were fired from 210 bombs per day and in total with other calibres up to 450 grenades per day. There was also distorted information, in 1915 they never fired from the 5 towers towards the fort, the artillery positioned was 75 mm, and 65 mm the distance was too much for a useful shot.
Among the Austrian troops there was talk that the Italians fired 240 mm grenades, supplied to the Austrians but not to the Italians.
At the 5 towers in 1915 there were 75 mm artillery, in the summer of 1916 149 mm pieces were placed and in September 1917 a 210 mm was placed which never fired on the fort, since the Italians were already aware of the abandonment building.
